The Prepositional phrases just like prepositions link words in a sentence. Prepositional phrases are composed of two or more words. The words can be: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs or prepositions. We will discuss the most common prepositional phrases.

In this lesson we will study the following prepositional phrases: faute de, jusqu'à, grâce à, loin de, par crainte de, and par rapport à

faute de

“faute de” means “for lack of” ,“in the absence of” or “otherwise”. It can be followed by a noun, a noun phrase or a verb in the infinitive. It can also be followed by “quoi” or “mieux”.

For example:

Faute de beurre, vous pouvez utiliser la margarine.
If you don’t have butter, you can use margarine.
